Mellor works on magnetic-field mapping and movement-artefact correction for moving OPM-MEG, characterising how residual fields and their gradients corrupt recordings as the head moves. She develops the calibration and modelling needed to suppress these artefacts and enable reliable data during motion. She also contributes to ictal and clinical OP-MEG recordings for epilepsy.
Menzel's group develops computational scattered-light imaging methods, principally 3D Polarized Light Imaging (3D-PLI) and coherent Fourier scatterometry, to reconstruct the crossing-fiber architecture of unstained brain tissue at micrometer resolution without labeling. The lab combines birefringence/diattenuation measurements with finite-difference time-domain light-scattering simulations to push orientation resolution of nerve-fiber tracts beyond what diffusion MRI or standard histology can achieve, and is actively recruiting postdocs to extend the technique to new tissue types and label-free contrast mechanisms.
Merklein is the independent PI within the Eggleton group most focused on the acoustic side of Brillouin physics: he demonstrated on-chip photon-phonon memory (coherently transferring an optical pulse into a long-lived acoustic excitation and back), and works on distributed Brillouin sensing in optical fibre and on the coherent control of travelling acoustic waves in waveguides. The distributed-sensing thread is a practical, sensitivity-limited measurement problem: recovering strain and temperature along kilometres of fibre from a very weak backscattered signal. Positioned against the established body of NV-ensemble quantum sensing work β DEER, nanoscale NMR and T1 relaxometry protocols operating at pT/sqrt(Hz) field sensitivity β phonon-mediated storage and readout is a complementary transduction channel to spin-based sensing, and the group is now pushing toward the quantum regime where the acoustic mode must be treated as a quantum object rather than a classical one. Early-career PI (DECRA) with genuine independence inside a large group.
Merkt leads the Molecular Physics and Spectroscopy group at ETH D-CHAB. Research directions: (1) High-resolution XUV/VUV spectroscopy β using synchrotron radiation and table-top laser sources to study molecular Rydberg states, ionization thresholds, and ro-vibrational structure at sub-MHz precision; (2) Precision molecular clock transitions β proposing and measuring molecular transitions suitable for fundamental constant variation searches (ΞΌ, Ξ±); (3) Metastable atom and ion trapping β developing new trapping methods for precision spectroscopy of exotic species; (4) Pulse and Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy β rotational spectroscopy of transient species. Direct applications to molecular quantum sensing and fundamental physics.
Metivier (PPSM) studies photochromic and fluorescent molecules at the single-molecule level - photoswitching kinetics, energy transfer and orientation-resolved imaging - underpinning super-resolution (RESOLFT/STORM-type) probes and molecular sensors. In the broader landscape of NV-centre ensemble quantum sensing (DEER, nano-NMR, T1 relaxometry) operating near pT/sqrt(Hz) sensitivity, this work is paralleled by molecular photoswitches enabling optical super-resolution.
Michler's IHFG grows and studies semiconductor quantum dots as on-demand single- and entangled-photon sources, including telecom-band emitters, on-chip Hanbury-Brown-Twiss/photonic integration, and atom-QD hybrid interfaces - core fundamental-light and quantum-photonic-sensing resources. Cleanroom epitaxy on site. In the broader landscape of NV-centre ensemble quantum sensing (DEER, nano-NMR, T1 relaxometry) operating near pT/sqrt(Hz) sensitivity, this work supplies nonclassical light sources that can enhance optical sensing.
Micolich works on semiconductor nanowire and organic/polymer nanoelectronic devices, with two strands relevant here: the physics of low-dimensional transport and noise in nanowire transistors, and the use of those devices as transducers at the interface with biological systems, where a nanowire field-effect transistor acts as an extremely local potentiometer sensitive to charge and potential changes at the cell membrane. The group has a strong record in noise spectroscopy β using 1/f and random telegraph noise as a diagnostic rather than a nuisance. Positioned against the established body of NV-ensemble quantum sensing work β DEER, nanoscale NMR and T1 relaxometry protocols operating at pT/sqrt(Hz) field sensitivity β nanowire FET bioelectronic sensing is the principal electrical competitor to NV-based bio-magnetometry: both aim to read out cellular electrophysiology without patch-clamping, one via magnetic fields at pT/sqrt(Hz), the other via local potential. Borderline inclusion, kept because the bio-interface sensing thread is genuine.
Middelmann develops OPM-based magnetorelaxometry imaging of magnetic nanoparticles, together with vector OPMs and OPM magnetomyography and MEG at PTB. His work reconstructs the location and quantity of magnetic nanoparticles from their relaxation signals, with applications in biomedical imaging and quality control. He combines sensor development with the inverse-problem methods needed to turn magnetometer data into images.
Leonardo Midolo develops III-V optoelectronic quantum devices at NBI. Research: (1) nanomechanical quantum photonic integrated circuits (NOEMS) β GaAs waveguide phase shifters, routers, and switches for single-photon routing; (2) heterogeneous integration of quantum dot emitters on silicon and SiN platforms; (3) quantum key distribution with deterministic single-photon sources over field-installed dark fibre. Group established 2022; Beamfox spinout for proximity correction.
Best known as a collider (ATLAS) physicist, Miller also leads the BREAD collaboration's broadband dish-antenna search for axion dark matter, converting axions to photons inside a solenoid magnet and reading them out with a THz receiver and Fourier-transform spectrometer to cover mass ranges inaccessible to narrowband cavity haloscopes. This is a fundamentally different quantum-sensing strategy than solid-state NV-ensemble magnetometers/thermometers, which reach pT/sqrt(Hz)-class sensitivity via DEER, NMR, and T1-relaxometry protocols on spin ensembles; Miller's approach instead pushes broadband photon-counting sensitivity for fundamental-physics searches. Actively recruiting postdocs for BREAD instrumentation and analysis.
